New All-Time Record! 165,000 concurrent viewers!

250% Network Growth Overnight!

The last weekend was a good one! We finally enjoyed the first rain after several weeks without a single raindrop and the hottest day of the year in Germany. With the temperature cooling down and some fresh water, everything felt kind of revived and fresh again.

Maybe it’s just a funny coincidence but this weekend was also very successful for Strive. Just like that, our P2P network almost TRIPLED in size! After our last record of 60,000 concurrent viewers during our case study “Is P2P Viable For Online Video Delivery?”, our video delivery network grew by 250% overnight. This time, we served over 165,000 concurrent viewers via WebRTC during a live sports event. With an amazing rate of 66%, two-thirds of the entire video traffic was handled by our technology Flink.

This is not only a great achievement for us but also a proof that scalability is handled perfectly by our Google Cloud-based infrastructure (to be honest, we were always kind of nervous that something like this would happen and go terribly wrong…).

Here are some metrics and charts that we want to share with you:

66% Peak Savings Rate

Traffic generated by WebRTC network

Shared CDN Traffic
7,4%

Fetched from CDN – Pushed into WebRTC network and used for P2P

CDN Only Traffic
25%

Fallback Traffic 1,6%

Expected from WebRTC network – Fallback to CDN

This diagram shows that still, about 25% of users have no access to WebRTC due to outdated browsers or the use of iOS. With the future progress of WebRTC support, the P2P traffic could rise up to 91%.
